The surrounding area
Situated eight miles north of Appleccross village on the unforgettable Applecross peninsular, this is a particularly scenic stretch of the West Coast of Scotland, made famous through "Monty Hall’s Great Escape" TV programme, and renowned for its wonderful marine life and for having the highest single track road pass in the UK, the Bealach na Bà.
The village of Applecross itself has two restaurants especially worth a visit, The Potting Shed and The Applecross Inn both serving locally caught fish. Also at Applecross village is a local shop for the necessities with a Post Office, a 24/7 self-serve filling station, and for coffee and cake there's the Junction café, and the Flower Tunnel at the campsite. The larger village of Lochcarron is 28 miles and Inverness is 80 miles away.
The Gaelic name for the area of Applecross is 'a Chomraich' which means 'The Sanctuary'. You will understand, immediately when you arrive, why it was given this name as it is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful and remote wilderness areas on the west coast of Scotland, lying between the Scottish mainland mountain masses and the Isle of Skye.
The Bealach na Bà. The highest single track road pass in Britain and one of the two routes you can take to Callakille, about 12 miles away.
Alternatively, you can take the coast road which includes this view of Loch Maree from Glen Docherty, soon to be followed by the spectacular Torridon mountains.

This beautiful beach at Sand on the inner Sound coast of the Applecross Peninsular is three miles from Callakille. It is believed to be one of the earliest settled parts of Scotland and is the site of a major archaeological study of shell middens.
An enchanting walk on an ancient path leads to one of the famous coral beaches near Culduie, about 1½ miles from Callakille. On the left of the river as you approach, the bank has been built up as part of the construction of an old salmon fishing station.
